Legend
has it that some curious goats, as they grazed,
came across a wild shrub with bright red berries.
After eating the berries, they were very merry.
That night, they didn’t sleep a wink, and
jumped around as though the sun hadn’t set
at all!
The goatherds were amazed, and very worried, so
they sought advice from a group of monks. The monks
boiled the strange beans in water and drank the
hot colourless brew, and, from then on, the long
nights of prayer seemed less long and tiresome.
A less well known legend tells of the Prophet Muhammad.
One day, Muhammad felt very ill, so the Archangel
Gabriel came to his aid, bringing a potion he had
received directly from Allah.
The beverage was as dark as the Holy Black Stone
in Mecca, generally known as "qawa". Muhammad
drank the brew. He immediately felt better, and
was soon off on further exciting ventures. |
